You don't need to live near farmland to create the style of a modern farmhouse in your dwelling. This unique home design typically includes an open floor plan, a simple color scheme and natural tones in wood floors like those in Anderson's Gnarly Plank collection.
According to Better Homes and Gardens magazine, the open, airy atmosphere that characterizes farmhouse decor is similar to country or cottage style in many ways - dusty, soft colors or off-white typically are a backdrop for kitchen cabinets in natural wood or painted ivory. Soft curtains such as sheers or lace bring in a flow of natural light and fit both traditional and contemporary country decorating. Adding shades or shutters will provide privacy. Woven shades come in a variety of wood tones that lend a natural look to their surroundings.
Furnishings in farmhouse rooms work best when they are an eclectic mix of styles. In a dining room, for instance, a set of chairs with wood carving or decorative trim is a good contrast to the more austere lines of a Parsons-style dining table. A Victorian parlor chair wouldn't look out of place next to a contemporary sofa in such decorating schemes.
The heart of a farmhouse
One modern Wisconsin farmhouse featured by HGTV was done in a classic motif without sacrificing all the electronics that are important to today's homeowners. The traffic pattern was open and a comfortable cooking area was offset by white, cottage-style cabinetry and a selection of collectibles that finished the room design.
The accessories used in farmhouse decorating should be in keeping with the functional atmosphere of an older home. Bowls and platters placed on open shelves above kitchen countertops are in a spot where they can be appreciated as well as used on a daily basis.
Instead of a kitchen island, a pine farm table may be placed in the center of the room with a matching chest underneath to provide storage for utensils. If guests are expected for dinner, a table setting that includes crisp linens, painted chairs and antique silver candleholders for a centerpiece would be right at home in a farmhouse-style dining room.
In other parts of the home, vintage accessories continue this theme. Cornices above the windows in the HGTV example were decorated with the homeowners' collection of old globes and maps. Other ideas include displaying art by placing it on bookcase shelves or on top of fireplace mantels.
