When TV design show host Shari Hiller chooses home accessories, she has her own recipe: inexpensive, lots of sentimental value and often found around the house. Best of all, like the classic hardwood floors found in Anderson's Lone Star collection, they have character that brings the homeowners' personalities into the rooms where they live.
As she explained on her website, Hiller find that certain types of accessories are better at filling these needs than other finishing touches she can bring to a room design. Family photos, books and collections speak to family memories and longtime associations. Pillows add warmth, artwork provides creativity and flowers signify growth.
Colorful and Rejuvenating
Artwork should be an addition to rooms that the homeowners really love and can turn into a conversation piece with visitors. It doesn't even have to match the furniture in the room, although coordinating hues in different pieces unifies the art.
Fresh flowers aren't necessarily an accessory that homeowners have every day in their homes, but they freshen a room instantly and add a quick touch-up to home design when company is expected. Several bunches can be gathered together for a dramatic display, or single buds can spruce up a table.
Style and function
Window treatments can be an attractive backdrop for accessories. Wooden blinds or woven shades both add texture to a room in a variety of finishes. Customized drapes or light and airy curtains can tie into other furnishings.
Pillows bring in both color and pattern, particularly in neutral rooms in which they can be changed seasonally. Different covers can be made for the same pillow forms, similar to changing slip covers on a sofa.
Personal and priceless
Hiller who co-hosts the PBS series, Around the House with Matt and Shari, suggested unifying photos by theme such as family events, or displaying all color or all black and white pictures along a hall or stairway wall.
Books can also be accessories. They can be used to lift a lamp up a bit to make it the right height or give more prominence to a photo on a stand. But assembled artfully in a bookcase, they give home design a richness that stands the test of time.
Displaying a personal collection can make an immediate impact in a room. They can be a focal point, often in colors that complement the room's color scheme.
