Starting Over…or Starting Anew?

Interior designers know many great techniques which can enhance a space, be it an existing one or a new space. Today’s floor plans have been growing smaller in square footage and also becoming more efficient in how the space is utilized. Homeowners have rediscovered the charm and warmth of a smaller floor plan in addition to the efficiency it offers. While one can enjoy and appreciate a smaller space, there is still a yearning for the feeling of openness. White walls go a long way in encouraging an expansive atmosphere and also allow greater freedom to create color “pop” with art, accessories and flooring. White is one of the leading trends for 2010 for walls, floors and cabinets…all shades. Another looking-large solution is fool-the-eye furniture placement. Unifying things in one place makes the furnishings appear to be one large collection, almost as if it were art. No piece of furniture should be backed up against a wall, except the bed. In living areas, turning two sofas toward cocktail tables where everything is pulled into the center of a darkly stained wood floor anchored with a beautifully patterned rug or textured carpet, enabling guests to meander freely throughout the furnishings.
